The Blood and Sand Cocktail is a classic scotch cocktail recipe named after the Rudolph Valentino movie about a bullfighter from the 1920s. The original recipe was first published in The Savoy Cocktail Book and used 3/4 oz proportions for all four ingredients. We prefer Dr. Cocktail's updated version from his Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails book that has slightly more scotch and orange juice. An addition to a lot of recipes is a flamed orange peel as a garnish. We prefer a good cherry because they taste better than flamed orange peels do and are a lot less fussy. This cocktail is best when you've shaken it hard enough to get small ice shards floating in the drink after you've strained it into the glass. The little ice shards give it an interesting texture that seems appropriate for a drink named Blood and Sand.
