Sauté the onion and garlic with a little oil in a medium-high pan for a few minutes.
1 cup white onion, 2 cloves garlic
Add the ground beef to brown, stirring as it cooks.
1 1/2 lbs ground beef
Once the ground beef has finished browning, pour off any excess liquid and reduce the heat to a low simmer.
Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, liquid smoke, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and apple cider vinegar, giving everything a good stir.
2 tbsp tomato paste, 1 14 oz can crushed tomatoes, 1 14 oz can diced tomatoes, 1 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1/2 tbsp stone ground mustard, 1/2 tsp liquid smoke
Stir in the chili powder, smoked paprika, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sloppy joes uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, to let the flavors come together.
1 tsp chili powder, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes, 1 1/2 tsp table salt, 1/2 tsp black peppe
Serve on toasted hamburger buns.
Notes
If stone ground mustard isn’t available, substitute any high quality mustard.
A cup of white onion is approximately 1/2 of a large white onion.
